Running for better health and a cause

BANGALORE: Fitness could be a pressing issue today but not many are willing to get set and run for their health. At least, not on a
Sunday morning. However, a group of enthusiasts in the city runs regularly in teams to spread the message of a healthy life. Over 300 runners took to the streets on Sunday as part of the second edition of `Feet on the street’ campaign. They ran around Ulsoor Lake and attended a training session on civil defence.

The event was held in partnership with Area Suraksha Mitra – Kannu teri Bengaluru, a civil defense initiative for citizen preparedness. Volunteers under the programme are trained to be ready both in cases contingencies and for neighbourhood security.

The runners witnessed a demonstration by Home Guards on rescuing victims from a high-rise building fire, and one by the Fire Services department on general fire safety equipment. Most of the participants joined the programme to volunteer on a regular basis. “We did two rounds of a 2.5 km stretch. The demonstration by Home Guards was the highlight. Many members got interested in civil defence and were ready to volunteer. Waking up on a Sunday to run is not easy. So we always attach a cause to give people more reasons to wake up and run,” said Arvind Bharathi, who started the organization Runners For Life.
