‘Liposuction leftovers’ better than skin cells to regenerate tissues

Washington, Sep 8 (ANI): Fat that is left after liposuction is a huge bank of versatile cells that could be more quickly and easily coaxed to become induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells than the often used skin cells, according to a study by researchers at Stanford’s School of Medicine.

Lead researcher Dr. Michael Longaker has even [...]

New discovery may help in developing effective cancer therapies

London, Sept 3 (ANI): Canadian researchers have come across a novel mechanism that may be instrumental in the development of new, more effective cancer therapies.

They have discovered that activation mechanism of the RAF protein kinase which, when mutated, is responsible for more than 25 per cent of [...]

Gene that determines sex in birds identified

London, Aug 27 (ANI): Ending a long debate about what determines the sex of birds, scientists have now found that the expression of just one gene in chickens controls whether they will grow up to become a hen or a cockerel.

While sex is decided via genes on one of two sex chromosomes (Y in mammals [...]

8 risk factors for transformation of eye growths into melanoma unveiled

Washington, August 11 (ANI): A team of Thomas Jefferson University researchers in the U.S. have identified eight risk factors to predict whether a choroidal nevus-a benign, flat, pigmented growth inside the eye and beneath the retina-may develop into melanoma.

“There is strong interest for early detection of choroidal melanoma [a malignant growth], and its differentiation from [...]

Tumour suppressor p53 also controls somatic cell reprogramming

London, August 10 (ANI): A new study has revealed that the tumour suppressor p53 not only stops cells that could become cancerous in their tracks, but it also controls somatic cell reprogramming.

Scientists have made significant advances in learning how to reprogram adult human cells such as skin cells into so-called induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), [...]
