Scientists find how stem cells make skin

London, Sept 14 (ANI): Scientists at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) have identified two proteins that prompt stem cells to develop into skin cells.

They hope that the new findings could help understand basic mechanisms involved not only in formation of skin, but also on skin cancer and other epithelial cancers.

According to lead researcher Claus [...]

Vitamin C can help protect DNA damage of skin cells

Washington, Sept 10 (ANI): Researchers at the University of Leicester and Institute for Molecular and Cellular Biology in Portugal have found that vitamin C can help protect DNA damage of skin cells and lead to better skin regeneration.

Previous research has shown that DNA repair is upregulated in people consuming vitamin C supplements.

In the new [...]

‘Liposuction leftovers’ better than skin cells to regenerate tissues

Washington, Sep 8 (ANI): Fat that is left after liposuction is a huge bank of versatile cells that could be more quickly and easily coaxed to become induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells than the often used skin cells, according to a study by researchers at Stanford’s School of Medicine.

Lead researcher Dr. Michael Longaker has even [...]

Now, acoustic tweezers to position tiny objects

Washington, Aug 29 (ANI): While it gets quite difficult to manipulate tiny objects like single cells or nanosized beads via relatively large, unwieldy equipment, Penn State engineers have now designed a new system that uses sound as a pair of tiny tweezers that are small enough to place infinitesimal objects on a chip.

While optical tweezers [...]

Novel method to make safer human stem cells uses just one gene

London, Aug 29 (ANI): Inching closer to curing diseases like Parkinson’s using cells generated from a patient’s own body, researchers have successfully reprogrammed human nerve cells back to an embryo-like state by using just a single gene.

It is known that embryonic stem cells are pluripotent – they can develop into any of the body’s cell [...]

Why older people are more prone to skin problems

Washington, Aug 28 (ANI): Scientists from University College London have found why older people are prone to cancer and infections of the skin.

They have shown that defective immunity in the skin is caused by an inability to mobilize essential defenses that [...]

Tumour suppressor p53 also controls somatic cell reprogramming

London, August 10 (ANI): A new study has revealed that the tumour suppressor p53 not only stops cells that could become cancerous in their tracks, but it also controls somatic cell reprogramming.

Scientists have made significant advances in learning how to reprogram adult human cells such as skin cells into so-called induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), [...]

Nerve cells that make us itch identified

London, Aug 7 (ANI): Neuroscientists have long scratched their heads to solve the puzzle of itching. But now researchers have finally worked out what makes us itch.

The research team, led by neuroscientist Zhou-Feng Chen and his colleagues at Washington University in St Louis, Missouri, [...]

Hormonal therapies offer effective solutions for acne

Washington, Aug 2 (ANI): While the chances of acne being curable are bleak, dermatologists are finding that hormonal therapies can help some women fight bothersome skin disease that occurs in adulthood.

At the American Academy of Dermatology’s Summer Academy Meeting 2009 in Boston, dermatologist Bethanee J. Schlosser, MD, PhD, FAAD, assistant professor of dermatology and director [...]
